Things You Should Know Before Using Benzoyl Peroxide For Acne

Benzoyl Peroxide is an excellent active ingredient for acne. However, it can have some downsides if not properly used. It can cause adverse side effects to your skin. I learnt the hard way

Before using benzoyl peroxide, I had tried many drugstore brands that did not clear my skin due to the lack of active ingredients. So when I stumbled across it, I could not wait to try it.

About Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is an excellent anti-bacterial ingredient that can be effective against germs that cause acne. However, you can be prone to some of the side-effects if it is not used properly.

Symptoms I experienced with Benzoyl Peroxide

Shedding

I had quite a bit of shedding when I used this initially. I do think this was because I was over applying and too frequently. Although, it is one of the highlighted symptoms

Dryness

Again, due to overusing the ingredient. I experienced additional drying. This is also a known disadvantage in that it can cause premature ageing. I needed to apply several layers of moisturiser twice a day to combat the dryness.

Swelling

I experienced swelling around my eye because I applied it too close to my eye area and some around my cheeks. If you experience this it is best to discontinue and consult with your pharmacist or GP.

Itchiness

For some reason, I had itchy skin. I believe it is because my skin was irritated. But with reducing the application amount and regularly moisturising. This did levitate this.

Please note that I stopped using benzoyl peroxide after these side effects for around 2 weeks. When I continued treatment, I significantly reduced the frequency and amount I was using. This has been key for my acne.

How to use Benzoyl Peroxide

Ensure that you do not use any active ingredients alongside benzoyl peroxide because it doesn’t play well with others. The key is to use it with non-comedogenic and fragrance-free products to reduce irritation.

Despite my horrendous side effects in the beginning. Benzoyl peroxide did work quite well to prevent my acne. However, it stopped being effective after some time.

I started with 5% Benzoyl peroxide and I recommend you try around 2% to reduce your skin sensitivity.
