Here are the best shampoos for thick and dry type 4 hair. They have been tried and truly tested. Most of these shampoos contain no silicones and/or harsh surfactants that remove the hair's natural oils. These shampoos will cleanse and remove build-up. In no particular order, here are some of our natural hair favourites.

As I Am Curl Clarity Shampoo 237ml

Key ingredients: Coconut Oil, Amla & Tangerine

It has a lovely scent and an unusual jelly consistency which we welcome. The lather is excellent on this. We love this shampoo because it cleans the hair without leaving it stripped of its natural oils. You can also build it up by going in with a second cleanse if you want to remove any build-up.

Kinky Tresses Avocado Infusion Sulfate-free Moisturising Shampoo 8 oz

Key ingredients- Coconut Oil, Rosemary & Lavender

Kinky Tresses was formulated for type 4 hair and the truth is in the pudding. I love this shampoo for many reasons. One of which is that it is black-owned. The lather on this shampoo is incredible, I only needed a small amount for my entire head & moisturising it is!

This has become one of my go-to shampoos.

Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse 12 oz

Key Ingredients: Sweet Ginger Root and Lemon Extracts

A cult favourite in the natural hair community and for a reason. Camille Rose Naturals did their thing with this shampoo. It has a light refreshing smell to it with a nice lather. They have now upgraded their bottles to include a nozzle and we are here for it.

This shampoo never dries out the hair, it cleanses leaving hair soft and shiny.

Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Shampoo

Key Ingredients- Apple Cider Vinegar, Aloe Vera Juice & Shea Butter

You might be surprised that the Shea Moisture JBCO shampoo is on this list as it contains protein that helps to strengthen the hair. Usually, such shampoos aren’t as moisturising. But, we still find this shampoo to be very moisturising, it is the perfect balance and moisture and protein. Not to mention the wonderful job that the Apple Cider Vinegar does. My hair always feels clean and my curls defined.

Creme of Nature Argan Oil Moisture & Shine Shampoo 354ml

This shampoo is affordable and effective. It cleans the hair well and has an amazing lather. If you are a new natural aren't too concerned with ingredients then try this one out. It is not curly girl-friendly. It leaves the hair feeling hydrated and doesn’t leave the hair stripped.

Kinky-Curly Come Clean Moisturising Shampoo 8 oz

Key Ingredients- Mandarin Orange Fruit, Willow Bark, Sea Kelp

The kinky curly shampoo is very popular and sells out. It is a gem for cleaning the hair, it is definitely more cleansing than some of the shampoos on the list. But due to the formulation, it never leaves the hair feeling stripped. It has a light and refreshing smell that does not linger.

Camille Rose Naturals Lavender Fresh Cleanse 8 oz

Key Ingredients- Apple Cider Vinegar, Lavender, Arnica Flower

I describe this shampoo experience as relieving and aromatherapeutic, this is due to the lavender and mellow extract. I love this shampoo for my dry hair, it gently cleanses the hair. The consistency is like the As I Am Curl Clarity Shampoo. Although great for dry hair, it also strengthens due to the Arnica Flower. My hair is clean and defined after using this shampoo.

MICHE Beauty Cleansed Sulfate-Free Shampoo 8 oz

Key ingredients: Hibiscus, White Willow, Ginseng) Root

When I first tried this shampoo, I found it to be very clarifying. Yet, I have been reaching for it more recently, It smells divine and removes build-up in my hair. I find that it is best to use this shampoo on pre-pooped hair. Although it doesn’t strip the hair of your natural oils, it can be drying if you don’t have healthy hair.
